Nonlinear Radiating Instability of a Barotropic Eastern Boundary Current

چکیده
Linear and nonlinear radiating instabilities of an eastern boundary current are studied using a barotropic quasigeostrophic model in an idealized meridional channel. The eastern boundary current is meridionally uniform and produces unstable modes in which long waves are most able to radiate. These long radiating modes are easily suppressed by friction because of their small growth rates. However, the long radiating modes can overcome friction by nonlinear energy input transferred from themore unstable trappedmode and play an important role in the energy budget of the boundary current system. The nonlinearly powered long radiating modes take away part of the perturbation energy from the instability origin to the ocean interior. The radiated instabilities can generate zonal striations in the ocean interior that are comparable to features observed in the ocean. Subharmonic instability is identified to be responsible for the nonlinear resonance between the radiating and trappedmodes, butmore general nonlinear triad interactions are expected to apply in a highly nonlinear environment.

A new mechanism for the generation of quasi-zonal jets in the ocean
[1] A simple barotropic quasi-geostrophic model is used to demonstrate that instabilities radiated from an unstable eastern boundary current can generate zonal striations in the ocean interior with realistic wavelengths and amplitudes. Nonlinear transfer of energy from the more unstable trapped modes is important for radiating modes to overcome friction. The dynamics shown here are generic enou...
متن کاملNonlinear dynamics over rough topography: barotropic and stratified quasi-geostrophic theory
The weakly nonlinear dynamics of quasi-geostrophic flows over a one-dimensional, periodic or random, small-scale topography is investigated using an asymptotic approach. Averaged (or homogenised) evolution equations which account for the flow-topography interaction are derived for both barotropic and continuously stratified geostrophic fluids. The scaling assumptions are detailed in each case; ...

This paper addresses the combined effects of couple stresses, thermal radiation, viscous dissipation and slip condition on a free convective flow of a couple stress fluid induced by a vertical stretching sheet. The Cogley- Vincenti-Gilles equilibrium model is employed to include the effects of thermal radiation in the study. The governing boundary layer equations are transformed into a system o...
متن کاملInstabilities of continuously stratified zonal equatorial jets in a periodic channel model
Several numerical experiments are performed in a nonlinear, multi-level periodic channel model centered on the equator with different zonally uniform background flows which resemble the South Equatorial Current (SEC). Analysis of the simulations focuses on identifying stability criteria for a continuously stratified fluid near the equator. A 90 m deep frontal layer is required to destabilize a ...
متن کاملAgeostrophic, anticyclonic instability of a geostrophic, barotropic boundary current
After having previously demonstrated the occurrence of ageostrophic, anticyclonic instability (AAI) for several other steady flows, in this paper we further test the hypothesis that rotating, stably stratified, shear flows are generally subject to AAI at finite Rossby (Ro) and Froude (Fr) numbers by calculating the inviscid, incompressible normal modes of a geostrophic, barotropic boundary curr...
